A ゛(dakuten) on the upper right voices the sound (か ka → が ga); a ゜(handakuten) turns the H-row into the P-row (pa pi pu pe po). The ぽ in Sapporo is exactly a handakuten!

A small ゃ·ゅ·ょ merges with the previous kana into one sound. Size changes meaning: じゆう (jiyū, "freedom") vs じゅう (jū, "ten"). Focus on the common combinations.
